A mortgage file, a semester, and a software platform look like three different jobs. They are the same job. In each case a person is standing inside a system that costs them more than it should, and the work is to find the friction, name it, and take it out. Twenty-eight years of mortgage files taught the instinct; the classroom made it teachable; the code made it scale. The combination is rare in a specific way. Practitioners with this much operating history usually cannot build. Builders usually do not hold a Series 65 and a DBA. Holding both means being able to speak credibly to a regulator, a graduate seminar, and an engineering review in the same week, and to mean the same thing in each room.
My father’s father and his family were forcibly expelled from their home in Al-Lydd and the family business in Yaffa in the 1940s. Our family’s path ran from Al-Lydd and Yaffa to Amman, to Lansdale, Pennsylvania — my mother in 1959, my father in 1973 — to Jacksonville, Florida. My parents were able to build a life for me and my brothers in the United States. I call that miraculous.
